Nyoshul monastery is located in Nyoshul town, Palyul county Kham, East Tibet in Sichuan province, it is a sacred holy place of the Dzogchen Longchen Nyingthig (Heart Essence of Vast Space) of great Nyingma lineage. Nyoshul monastery is on a quiet snow mountain while there is a vast quest forest at the bottom. It is elevation 4,500 to 4,800 meters high. It is very impoverished here but it is a previous place for the spiritual practice.

¡¡Here is the hometown of the Nyoshul Lungtok, the dharma-successor of Dza Patrul Rinpoche. Nyoshul Lungtok was very sad while leaving Dza Patrul Rinpoche after finishing the study. Dza Patrul comforted him by telling him that the emanation of Vimalamitra would be born soon, and he could not meet himself, and fortunately Nyoshul Lungtok could.


¡¡Later Nyoshul Lungtok diligently practices at Nyoshul town. He practiced "The Way Of the Bodhisattva" for ten years, and "Finding Comfort and Ease in the Nature of Mind (sems nyid ngal gso)" for three years. In 1883, Nyoshul Lungtok met a boy, who is the emanation of Vimalamitra, Ngawang Palzang (Khenpo Ngakga), later the boy became the disciple of Nyoshul Lungtok and dharma-successor.

¡¡Khenpo Ngawang Palzang is one of the greatest Dzogchen masters and Panditas. His renown writings are: "A Guide to the Words of My Perfect Teacher" (translated into English by Padmakara Translation Group, http://www.amazon.com/Guide-Words-My-Perfect-Teacher/dp/1590300734), ¡°Note of Threkchod Practice (gzhi khregs chod skabs kyi zin bris bstan pa'i nyi ma zhal lung snyan brgyud chu bo'i bcud ¡®dus)¡±, ¡±Note of Thodgal Practice(shin tu gsang ba chen po thod rgal snyan brgyud kyi zin bris kun tu bzang po'i dgongs rgyan yig med u pa de sha mkha' ¡®gro'i thugs kyi ti la ka)¡±,¡± Commentary of Yeshe Lama(rdzogs pa chen po ye shes bla ma'i spyi don snying thig ma bu'i lde mig kun bzang thugs kyi ti la ka)¡±.

¡¡Khenpo Ngawang Palzang was appointed to teach at Kathog Monastery's newly opened shedra at the age of thirty. In 1910, according to the suggestion of Kathok Situ Rinpoche, he established two monasteries, one is the Payul Shedra and the other is the Nyoshul Monastery, which later became Khenpo Ngawang Palzang's the most important place for teaching and residence. He trained a lot of great disciples, such as the 2nd Nyoshul Lungtok Rinpoche, Tulku Arik, Khenpo Munsel, Kathok Chatsa Rinpoche, Jamyang Khyentse Chogyi Lodro, Chatral Sangye Dorje, Khenpo Polo Dorje (Bomta Khenpo) , Kathok Khenpo Gyaltsan Osel, Terton Urgyen Chemchug, etc ¡£

¡¡In 1941, Khenpo Ngawang Palzang passed away at Nyoshul Monastery. His successor, 2nd Nyoshul Lungtok Rinpoche continued turning the dharma wheel of nine yanas at Nyoshul monastery. Some of his disciples are Sangye Tsering Rinpoche, Kathok Situ Shedrup Tenpai Nyima, Nyoshul Khenpo Jamyang Dorje, etc. During the Ten Year culture Revolution, 2nd Nyoshul Lungtok passed away in the prison. His successor Sangye Tsering Rinpoche hosted the cremation ritual. Since then, Sangye Tsering Rinpoche became the abbot of the Nyoshul monastery. In 1944, according to Khenpo Ngawang Palzang's own prediction (seen in autobiography of Khenpo Ngawang Palzang), his reincarnation was born in Gongpo of Tibet. His father named him as Sangye Tsering, Kathok Situ Rinpoche and others lamas found the tulku. Reting Rinpoche (the regent of Tibet government) bestowed his name as 'jam dpal legs bshad chos gyi nyi ma'. In 1944, Sangye Tsering Rinpoche was officially throned at Nyoshul Monastery.

¡¡During the time of Culture Revolution of China, Sangye Tsering Rinpoche was forced into prison, and Nyoshul Monastery was destroyed too. In 1977, Rinpoche finally came back to the monastery, and restored and re-built the Shrine room, Shedra and other places in monastery. Rinpoche gave the teaching of Rinchen Terzod four times in Nyoshul and other monasteries. At Nyoshul Monastery, Khenpo Munsel, Kathok monastery's tulkus, Khenpo Achuk, the abbot of Yachen Gar, and other disciples and students all accepted the Rinchen Terzod empowerment from the Rinpoche. The Very Venerable Sangye Tsering Rinpoche is one of the renowned Nyingma mahasiddha. He spends a lot of time in solitude retreat, teaches the Ngondro and Main practice of Dzogchen, and gives the Khenpo Ngawang Palzang's pith instruction to the qualified students. Rinpoche always stay far away from the relation with worldly affairs, does not like gathering the students. He merely asks students to practice impermanent, egoless, love and compassion and practice diligently.

¡¡In 1977, Sangye Tsering Rinpoche's son, 3rd Nyoshul Lungtok Rinpoche Shedrub Tendzin was born. He is the tulku of 2nd Nyoshul Lungtok Rinpoche, who now is the abbot of the Nyoshul Monastery, and teaches the dharma in the Nyoshul town. He re-prints the The Collected Works of Khenpo Ngawang Palzang(smyo shul mkhan po ngag dbang dpal bzang bka' 'bum), built the Longchen Nyingthig Mandala Palace, added forty cabinets for the monks, built twenty retreat rooms, offer living supply to the students and retreatents.

¡¡As a holy place of Dharma, Nyoshul Monastery continuously with dharma teaching and practicing, which attracts a lot of practitioners. Now Nyoshul Monastery has two separate monasteries for Bhikkhus and Bhikkhunis, and it has a large shrine room, Shedra, Longchen Nyingthig Mandala Palace , Retreat house. There are more than one hundred residential monks, and more than ten retreatants. The Shedra opens courses every year. The courses are mainly based on the works of Longchenpa and Jamgon Miphan Rinpoche under Nyingma lineage. As of practicing, according to the schedule of traditional three-year-retreat program, during the first year, it teaches Dzogchen Ngondro (Five preliminary practices), Dzogchen Main Practice, Tsa Lung, and during the second and third year, Guru Yoga, Rigdzin Dupa, DugNgal, Ladrup Thigle Gyachen, Ngawang Palzang Guru Yoga, Palchen Dupa, Tamdrin, Phurpa, Yumka Dechen Gyalmo, Jetsun Drolma,Karling Zhi Thro are taught.
